🍪 **Discover the Enchanting Bermuda Archipelago in a Biscuit** 🏝️
Shaped like a fishhook, the Bermudas form a semi-tropical string of more than 180 islands nestled in the North Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 667 miles directly west of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Despite their relatively small size, spanning only 20.6 square miles, the islands have an abundance of natural beauty to offer. Stretching 21 miles in length and just 1 mile in width, Bermuda’s captivating charm goes beyond its compact dimensions.
🏝️ **A Tale of Exploration and Colonization**
Named after the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez, Bermuda’s true history was shaped by the arrival of the English ship Sea Venture, which found itself marooned on the island during a devastating hurricane. This event marked the beginning of Bermuda’s colonisation and eventual settlement. Today, Bermuda stands as a renowned tourist destination celebrated for its lush landscapes, breathtaking sunsets, turquoise seas, pink-sand beaches, and warm hospitality. The island is home to a diverse population of around 65,000 people, hailing from African, Caribbean, British, and Portuguese backgrounds.
🏞️ **The Parishes, Municipalities, and Villages**
Bermuda is divided into nine parishes, each with its unique character and charm: Devonshire, Hamilton, Paget, Pembroke, St George’s, Sandys, Smith’s, Southampton, and Warwick. Additionally, the island features two municipalities: St George’s and the city of Hamilton. Interestingly, the town of St George’s is encompassed by St George’s Parish, while Hamilton Parish and the city of Hamilton are not geographically close to each other. St George’s, the larger of the two municipalities, served as Bermuda’s capital until 1815, when the newly established Hamilton took its place. Bermuda is also home to two charming ‘Villages’: Flatts Village and Somerset Village.
