From: $10.00

The Moongate is a common feature in gardens in Bermuda, with over 40 on island, most in private residences. The first was built by a local sea captain around 1860 who was inspired by the east, after seeing one in a Chinese garden. He was so moved by the simplicity and grace of the structure, that he built one on his return. Made of local limestone, they require a wooden frame in which to place the pre-cut stones, gradually building up either side until the keystone is hammered in which knocks out the framing. Claimed to be an architectural accident. Legend has it that people who walk through a Moongate are blessed with good luck, so a tradition for couples and newlyweds to pass through a moongate together to ensure future happiness together.
