Why ‘Biscuits’ and not Cookies?
WHY WE USE THE WORD ‘BISCUITS’ INSTEAD OF THE MORE COMMONLY USED ‘COOKIES’:-
Aptly dubbed the ‘Crown Jewel of the Atlantic,’ Bermuda is a semi-tropical string of more than 180 islands situated roughly 650 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and an internally self-governing British Overseas Territory. Borne of excitement and adventure, the islands were settled accidentally in 1609 when the English ship Sea Venture, en route to Jamestown, crashed on the reefs after weathering a record hurricane for three days. As there were no indigenous natives of the islands, the English quickly set about building fortifications to preserve what they had stumbled upon. Soon came St. George’s, the island’s oldest town, which lays claim to the title of ‘oldest continuously-occupied settlement’ in the western hemisphere. It is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bermuda’s culture and ‘feel’ defy easy explanation; they are a unique blend of Anglo-African heritage set against some of the most beautiful and distinctive landscapes one will ever see. We are a quirky bunch; we drink English tea while watching American football, we celebrate the Queen’s birthday as she is our head of state, but keep a keen interest in who our American neighbors elect as their president. In deciding how to label our brand of cookies to capture the ‘essence’ of Bermuda, we have held true to our Anglo history by naming them biscuits, just as the English do.
