Banana Palm – luxury hand iced cookie biscuit

From: $10.00

Though not indigenous, the Bermuda Banana palm is a beloved fixture of island life, flourishing in gardens, hedgerows, and sheltered valleys across Bermuda. Its broad, wind-tattered leaves form an unmistakable tropical silhouette so closely tied to the island’s character, each fresh leaf unfurling from the centre in a bright green spiral. From the heart of the plant appears a deep purple bud, opening to reveal clusters of small, creamy-yellow bananas. Known locally as Bermuda bananas or Dwarf Cavendish, these petite fruits are sweeter and softer than commercial varieties and have long held a cherished place in our cuisine. They are an essential accompaniment to the island’s iconic codfish breakfast, their gentle sweetness balancing the savoury salt cod, potatoes, and Johnny bread. Hardy and quick to regenerate after storms, the banana tree has become a quiet symbol of resilience and abundance. The Bermuda banana also played an unexpected role in British history. In 1633, London apothecary Thomas Johnson displayed the first fresh bananas ever seen by the English public, fruit shipped from Bermuda. His vivid description of their soft, melon-like pulp marked the first documented introduction of bananas in England, placing Bermuda at the heart of an early botanical moment.
